HOME BUILDERS CARE

Community Outreach and Charitable Activities
Home Builders Care encompasses the philosophy of community outreach activities conducted by builders and home builder associations across the nation. Each year, the home building industry contributes millions of dollars in cash, building materials, supplies, and countless volunteer hours to community charities through local community service projects.

In addition to local community projects, NAHB has a long history of helping in times of need. In response to Hurricane Katrina, NAHB, through the National Housing Endowment, established a relief fund to aid victims in the Gulf Coast states. Consumers and builders can access resources to help them rebuild their homes and businesses from the NAHB Disaster Resources section.

The response to Hurricane Katrina is similar to the fund established after the December 2004 tsunami struck South Asia. NAHB and the National Housing Endowment established the Home Builders Care/National Housing Endowment-Tsunami Shelter Fund to raise funds to help provide shelter relief and is partnering with Shelter for Life International and Habitat for Humanity International to build homes and a Disaster Response Technical Center in the region. Another example was the creation of the Home Builders Care Victims’ Relief Fund in 2001 for the victims and families of the terrorist attacks of September 11. Within five months of establishing the fund, 5,000 members of the home building industry contributed $9.8 million, which has been distributed to victims and their families.

NAHB and the National Housing Endowment also honor local community service programs nationally each year with the National Housing Endowment/Home Builders Care Project of the Year Award and the new National Housing Endowment Builder Achivement Award for Outstanding Community Service. NAHB is a trade association that helps promote the policies that make housing a national priority. Since 1942, NAHB has been serving its members, the housing industry, and the public at large.

NAHB exists to represent the building industry by serving its members and affiliated state and local builders associations. To achieve an overall mission of member satisfaction, NAHB concentrates on the following goals:
Balanced national legislative, regulatory, and judicial public policy. Public appreciation for the importance of housing and those who provide it. The premier resource for industry information, education, research, and technical expertise. Improved business performance of its members and affiliates. Effective management of staff, financial, and physical resources to satisfy the association’s needs.

NAHB strives to create an environment in which:
All Americans have access to the housing of their choice and the opportunity to realize the American dream of homeownership. Builders have the freedom to operate as entrepreneurs in an open and competitive environment. Housing and those who provide it are recognized as the strength of the nation.

NAHB's various groups analyze policy issues, take the industry’s story to the public through the media and other outlets, monitor and work toward improving the housing finance system, analyze and forecast economic and consumer trends, and educate, train and disseminate information to members. The association also represents the industry’s interests on Capitol Hill and strives to ensure that housing remains a national priority when laws are made and policies are established. NAHB also works with federal agencies on regulations affecting the housing industry in areas such as mortgage finance, codes, energy and the environment. Finally, the association strives to shape decisions of the courts, by becoming involved in litigation on land development, environmental, and construction liability matters, such that laws and regulations may be interpreted favorably for the housing industry.
